What to Know About ‘Safe Exit’ Ahead of Its Middle East Premiere Tonight

Premieres By Habiba Abdulsalam 20 October 2026

Egyptian cinema is taking the spotlight at the 9th El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) tonight as Safe Exit makes its Middle East premiere. Written and directed by Mohammed Hammad, the film has already travelled across several international film festivals and earned a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Now, it’s bringing its story closer to home. Here’s what to know ahead of its GFF premiere.

The Story Follows a Young Man Haunted by Loss

Safe Exit follows Samaan, a young Coptic man working as a security guard in an apartment building in downtown Cairo. After his father dies in an accident, Samaan struggles with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder, navigating the psychological aftermath of loss and the ways it shapes his life.

Things take an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Fatimah, forming a bond that eventually leads him to confront a violent past that continues to haunt his generation or find a way to hide from it.

Meet the Team Behind the Film

Written and directed by Mohammed Hammad, Safe Exit brings together a cast of emerging Egyptian talents, including Marwan Walid, Rodaina Fouad, and Hazem Essam, alongside acclaimed actress Magda Mounir. The film is produced by Pareidolia Productions, with a team bringing Hammad’s story to the screen through a deeply personal lens.

It’s the Only Egyptian Film in GFF’s Feature Film Competition

The film is competing in the Feature Film Competition, making it the only Egyptian production selected for the category this year.

Its Middle East premiere takes place tonight, October 20, at 7:00 pm at El Gouna Conference and Culture Center. If you’re hoping to catch it at the festival, make sure to plan ahead, as this will be its only screening at GFF.

Hammad will attend the screening alongside producer Kholoud Saad and cast members Marwan Walid, Rodaina Fouad, Youssef Meselhy, and Hazem Essam, joined by sound mixer Ahmed Gaber and editor Dina Farouk. A press conference is also scheduled for October 21 at 11:30 am.

Its International Festival Journey Is Already Going Strong

Before arriving in El Gouna, Safe Exit made its world premiere in Berlin and travelled to Shanghai, Milan, Cologne, Rio de Janeiro, and Belgrade. Its festival run continues in parallel with GFF, with the film screening at the 48th Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival (CINEMED 2026) in France as part of its official feature film selection.

Earlier in October, it also screened at the 28th Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival in Brazil, in the Expectations section, and at the 53rd FEST International Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia, as part of its international competition.

It’s Also in the Running for a Major International Award

Beyond its festival screenings, Safe Exit has earned a nomination for Best Screenplay at the 19th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), often dubbed the “Asian Oscars.”

The awards ceremony is set to take place on October 30, 2026, in Gold Coast, Australia. With the nomination adding another milestone to its journey, the film has plenty to celebrate as it makes its Middle East debut in El Gouna.

With its compelling story, rising Egyptian talent, and growing international recognition, Safe Exit is one to keep on your radar at this year’s GFF. Now that you know what to expect, all that’s left is to catch its Middle East premiere tonight and see what Mohammed Hammad’s latest film has in store.
