Chasing Life: Egyptian Films & TV Shows With Characters Who Beat Cancer
Beyond the drama and romance, some Egyptian films and TV shows have told stories about living with cancer, showing its impact on a person’s life and relationships.
Here are six films and shows that explored these stories.
Halawet El Donia
When she is diagnosed with leukemia, Amina, played by Hend Sabry, begins to see which people in her life stand by her. While some relationships fall apart and others grow stronger, she also forms new connections, particularly with Selim, played by Dhafer L’Abidine, who is also a cancer patient.

Bedoun Sabeq Inzar
Marwan and Laila, played by Asser Yassin and Aicha Ben Ahmed, have their lives turned upside down when they learn that their son, Omar, has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. But the diagnosis is only the beginning of their ordeal. Blood test results reveal that Omar isn’t their biological son. As they fight to save him, they set out to uncover what happened and find his biological parents.

Midterm
Revolving around a group of teenagers, one of the show’s subplots explores the strained relationship between sisters Hana and Nadine. When Nadine, played by Passant Abu Basha, is diagnosed with leukemia, Hana, played by Omnia Bahy, faces a difficult decision: donate bone marrow to save her sister, despite the risk of medical complications, or put her own health first. Eventually, Hana decides to undergo the procedure, hoping it will also help repair their relationship.

Kamel El Adad +1
When Ahmed’s father, Mokhtar, played by Tamim Abdo, is diagnosed with cancer, he is determined not to let it change his life. Rather than undergo surgery, he wants to spend the time he has left enjoying life with his family. However, his grandson Sherif manages to change his mind by reminding him of the advice he once gave him: to keep fighting when Sherif was injured.

Abo El Arousa
In the second season of this family drama, Aida, played by Sawsan Badr, is diagnosed with breast cancer. Initially, she keeps the news from her family to avoid worrying them. However, she eventually realizes that she doesn’t have to face the diagnosis alone. As she undergoes surgery, her family stands by her, showing how they come together when one of them needs support.

Enta Omry
When Youssef, played by Hani Salama, is diagnosed with cancer, he tells his wife he is going abroad, hiding the fact that he is actually leaving for treatment. While there, he meets Shams, played by Nelly Karim. The two support each other through treatment, but their friendship gradually develops into love, complicating an already difficult situation.
Although Youssef dies in the end, his wife and son, Ramy, find a new family connection in Shams, who survives cancer.

All these stories show that life doesn’t stop when things get difficult. Good and bad moments often happen at the same time, and sometimes it’s the people around us and the little things in life that help us get through it.
